How to Protect Inverter ACs, Smart TVs & Compressors from BESCOM Voltage Fluctuations

Modern households and commercial spaces in Bengaluru are filled with sophisticated electronics: 5-star inverter air conditioners, variable-speed brushless DC (BLDC) refrigerators, high-end 4K/8K OLED televisions, and smart home automation hubs.

However, these modern appliances are far more vulnerable to voltage fluctuations, neutral drops, and sudden blackouts than older mechanical appliances.

Why “Inverter” Appliances Are Vulnerable

There is a common misconception that because an appliance is labeled “Inverter AC” or “Inverter Refrigerator”, it already contains a built-in power backup or voltage stabilizer.

The Reality:

  • The “inverter” in an AC refers to a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) that modulates compressor speed to save energy.
  • This internal drive board contains sensitive Microcontroller Units (MCUs), Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs), and electrolytic filter capacitors.
  • When BESCOM grid voltage drops below 170V or surges above 270V, the internal power supply draws excessive current, causing the printed circuit board (PCB) to overheat and burn out.
  • Replacement Cost: Replacing an inverter AC outdoor PCB board typically costs between ₹8,000 and ₹14,000—often not covered under standard manufacturer warranties if caused by voltage surges.

Three Steps to Total Appliance Protection

Step 1: Deploy a Dedicated Servo Voltage Stabilizer for Heavy Compressors

For homes or commercial buildings in areas with chronic low voltage (such as newly developed layouts around Sarjapur Road, Kanakapura Road, or North Bangalore), a Servo Voltage Stabilizer corrects fluctuating input voltages (160V–280V) into a continuous, stepless 230V ± 1%.

Unlike noisy relay stabilizers that cut off power suddenly, a servo unit smoothly adjusts voltage without interrupting air conditioning or refrigeration cycles.

Step 2: Use Pure Sine Wave UPS for Backup Continuity

When grid power cuts off, running an inverter refrigerator or AC compressor on a cheap modified square wave inverter causes extreme motor humming and capacitor stress.

A Pure Sine Wave UPS (2.5KVA to 5KVA capacity) provides:

  • Seamless zero-gap transfer so compressors do not stall under pressure.
  • Total Harmonic Distortion under 3%, allowing BLDC motors to run cooler and quieter.

Step 3: Ensure Proper Earth/Ground Resistance (< 2 Ohms)

Even the best surge protection device (SPD) cannot divert transient voltage spikes if your building’s earthing pit is dry or degraded. Ensure regular earthing audits to maintain resistance below 2 Ohms.
